Habitat Success Stories

Johnson Family

I, Bryan Michael Johnson, was born October 12, 1973 to Mr. Brian Massey and Ms. Donna Johnson. My mother raised three boys: myself, Byron, and Gregory Johnson. We lived in the Calliope Housing Development, which in May 1981 was renamed the B.W. Cooper Housing Development. Unfortunately, living there was very complicated; hearing rapid gun shots that sometimes resulted in murders. Witnessing drug activity that lead to arguments, fights, etc, my mother moved us out of the projects in my freshman year of high school. We were sent to live with my aunt in the Oak Park area of Gentilly. It was there I learned that you didn’t have to live around violence. I said that if I was to ever own my own home, it would be somewhere my family would be safe and will be proud to call home. I’m not ashamed of where I came from but I know that there was nothing promising about that environment. I have two kids and with the help of Habitat, they will have a place to call home. I would like to thank Habitat, staff and volunteers, because it is much needed as well as appreciated. Thank You!
