Donor Profile: Quality Group

Anyone who’s watched all the preparation that goes into setting up for Mardi Gras (the stands, the roadblocks, the miles of portalets) knows that any large-scale event requires a lot of set-up, but we often don’t think about what goes on behind everyday events. For example, says Rick Gervais (pictured), Senior Project Manager of commercial movers Quality Group, “No one asks themselves how that law firm gets to the 38th floor of One Shell Square,” and yet somehow all the desks, chairs, and filing cabinets make it up there!

Quality Group founder and President Joseph DiGiovanni studied logistics and transportation at LSU, and, after working for a household mover, found his niche in commercial moving. Begun in 1987, Quality Group specializes in commercial and facility relocations as well as furniture installations. “We do everything from move planning and coordination,” says Gervais, “to going in there over the weekend with 50 guys and making sure [that company] can make money again on Monday.”

In keeping with their can-do attitude, all six senior management share the title of Project Manager, because, says Gervais, “We work at 1000 mph all the time….we like to be viewed as interchangeable parts.”

And how does Habitat fit into this finely tuned machine?

The Quality Group’s partnership with the ReStore began shortly after Hurricane Katrina. Gervais says, “We had had knowledge of Habitat before then but when they really just hit the area with resources from all over, it was hard not to take note. We really wanted to get involved but didn’t know how right away. Then, in 2009, we took notice of the ReStore and how that worked. We routinely come into office furniture…. And we saw an opportunity to pass things through from customers to the ReStore and let things run their course.”

A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes here at the ReStore, as well. We coordinate donation pickups, price and arrange them, train our volunteers and partner families to work in the store, and finally channel our ReStore proceeds back into our community by building quality, affordable homes for our partner families.

To find quality items for a great price, come visit us at the ReStore this week! We’re located at 2900 Elysian Fields Avenue, open from 10-6 Tuesday through Saturday.  Interested in donating? Swing by to drop your donation off, sign up for a pickup on our website, or give us a call at 504-943-2240.

Phones aren’t the only things that like updates.
