Baptist Crossroads

Pre-Katrina, the Baptist Crossroads Project was slated to build 40 homes. Following the storm, the Baptist Crossroads Foundation announced plans to expand the project by ten times! The initial 40 homes are now complete, and NOAHH and the Baptist Crossroads Foundation are looking forward to continuing their collaboration. According to Habitat for Humanity International’s Church Relations Department, this is is the largest single project, funded and built, by a single sponsoring organization or denomination in the history of Habitat for Humanity worldwide.

Sensing a call from God to address the needs of impoverished New Orleans families, Dr. David Crosby and the members of First Baptist New Orleans launched the Baptist Crossroads vision in January 2005. Following Hurricane Katrina, the project became even more significant. “When Katrina happened I told the church, you know, maybe what God wants to do is 400 instead of 40, and I’m wide open to the prospect and possibility that this may well happen,” Crosby stated.

Now the Baptist Crossroads Foundation has agreed to sponsor an additional 300 homes in the Upper Ninth Ward. An estimated 60,000 volunteers are needed over the next 5 years in order to complete the project. Crosby sees the Baptist Crossroads Project as a key component of the recovery of New Orleans. “We’re going to try to bring a new city out of the flood zone, and prayer is a key to it. We also can use volunteers from everywhere and, all churches, college groups and youth groups are welcome.”
