Great American Cleanup Day

As part of our efforts to rebuild communities and revitalize the neighborhoods we work in, we are joining with Akili Academy, Green Light New Orleans, and HandsOn New Orleans to participate in Keep America Beautiful's program the Great American Cleanup Day. With funding from Keep Louisiana Beautiful, we will be able to do a variety of revitalization projects in the area surrounding Bunny Friend Park, in Upper Ninth Ward, New Orleans. Some of the projects include litter abatement, sidewalk clearing, storm drain cleaning and building a backyard garden. These efforts will be part of a national day of service that included the work of 4.2 million volunteers in 2012, in over 20,000 communities across the country. We are proud and excited to be joining the thousands of other organizations that take part yearly in this program!

The Great American Cleanup Day will be May 11th, from 9 am until 12 pm. If you are interested in volunteering, please email NOAHH

Attack the Block

Through the execution of our mission, to build safe, decent, affordable homes, NOAHH has also realized the need to expand its affect on communities by rallying volunteers to complete neighborhood revitalization projects.  During Spring Break 2012, NOAHH held its first "Fun Fridays: Attacking the Block" clean-up days where on Fridays, volunteers were treated to lunch by a Build Up An Appetite partner and then instead of returning to help construct a home, they fanned out in key areas to help clean-up the neighborhood by collecting trash, clearing overgrowth on public walkways, clearing storm drains, and installing energy efficient light bulbs.

This year, the program is back and ready to attack more areas to make a difference.  Volunteers scheduled to work with NOAHH on key Fridays will join in on the fun and try to outdo the volunteers from 2012.

Stats from 2012
  • collected 525 bags of garbage
  • removed 241 tires/bulk items
  • cleared 108 sidewalks
  • cleaned 186 storm drains
Can it be done?  We think the 2013 volunteers will rise to the challenge.  Be sure and check back for progress.
