Donor Profile: Jefferson Door
For the past five years, the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore has been proud to work with Jefferson Door, a local company whose generous in-kind donations and homegrown heritage make them perfect partners in our mission to build homes, communities, and hope.
Jefferson Door is a full-service millwork company that distributes doors, windows, columns and other wood fixtures necessary to furnish houses. Now in its third generation of family ownership, the business got its start in 1959 at a small warehouse in Gretna. Ten years later, it has expanded to its current location with a 4,000 sq. ft. facility in Harvey.
As an active company doing business with contractors and homeowners across the Greater New Orleans area, Jefferson Door occasionally ends up with surplus or returned orders. Chris Van Dervort, grandson of founder Jack Van Dervort, explains that “A number of returns that we get are good product that just needs to be matched up with someone who needs it. Rather than throw it away, we can help a good cause and save on disposal costs. It’s a win-win. “
“Doors are our second biggest seller after furniture,” said Quinn McCourt, floor manager for the ReStore. “So it’s important that we have a wide selection to offer our customers. “
Customers often come to the ReStore for the same reasons that businesses donate: because it offers a wide selection of building materials and home furnishings, makes economic sense, keeps useful items out of landfills, and, most importantly, because they believe in the mission: to provide decent, affordable homes for our hardworking partner families.
