Welcome to Camp Hope!

Camp Hope is a former middle school being used as a basic housing facility for volunteers.  Camp Hope provides a place to sleep, recreation space, wireless internet, meeting spaces, 2 hot meals and a bag lunch for your workday.  Camp Hope welcomes volunteers from most organizations working in the greater New Orleans Area.

  • Volunteers must be at least 18.
  • Volunteers need to arrange their own transportation to and from the camp, volunteer work projects and entertainment venues.
  • The cost for staying at Camp Hope is $25/night, payable by check, or credit card (MC or Visa).
  • Volunteers provide their own bedding, towels and toiletries.

    What to Expect at Camp Hope

    Directions-  Camp Hope is located at 1201 Bayou Rd, St Bernard, LA 70085 .

    Office Hours  Effective May 18th the Camp Hope office has new office hours of operation.   The Camp Hope office is open 365 days per year, however some office hour adjustments may be made on major holidays, i.e. Memorial Day, Christmas, New Years Day, etc.  The new office hours are as follows:
    Sunday -- 9 am – 7 pm
    Monday thru Friday -- 7 am – 7 pm
    Saturday -- 7 am – 6 pm

    Saturday Check-In Closed -- Effective with registrations made beginning on May 18, 2008 Camp Hope will be closed on Saturdays for check-in so the camp can prepare for the new week’s arrivals.  If your travel plans call for you to arrive in the New Orleans area on Saturday, you will need to make alternative plans for the evening.  The Camp Hope office will re-open on Sunday mornings at 9 am for volunteer check-in.  Those individuals and groups registered prior to May 18, 2008 already scheduled to arrive on Saturday may still do so.

    What to Pack- Download our suggested packing list for the summer months .Please DO NOT over-pack!  We do not have room for large bags!

    Orientation- ALL volunteers staying at Camp Hope must attend an orientation.  The orientation covers information about St. Bernard and specific information that volunteers need to know about the camp and work sites.  Orientations are normally given on Sunday and Monday evenings at 8 pm.  The schedule for the orientation is subject to change.

    Camp Hope On-Site Support Program- Camp Hope is a volunteer base camp supported by the volunteers who stay at the camp.  Activities related to camp support include janitorial/building/grounds maintenance support.  Effective May 24, 2008 volunteers staying at Camp Hope will be required to participate in one of these camp support functions.  A weekly schedule has been established for sign-up when an individual volunteer or group arrives at Camp Hope.  Individual volunteers and small groups (9 or fewer members) staying four or more nights at camp are required to sign-up for one support shift during their stay.  Large volunteer groups (10 or more members) staying four or more nights are required to provide one person per day for camp support.  Volunteers will be asked during check-in to sign up for the camp support activities.  The camp support hours are from 7 to 8 pm Monday thru Friday.  We appreciate your efforts to help rebuild the greater New Orleans area and ask for that same support in helping Camp Hope remain a vital part of the overall recovery effort.
     
    Rooms- are dormitory style and divided by gender. Rooms have from 12-15 double-deck bunks.  You must bring your own bedding; sheets, pillows, blankets, and/or sleeping bag.  All rooms and the buildings are air-conditioned.  

    Curfew- Monday - Thursday - MIDNIGHT; Friday - Sunday- 2AM.

    Quiet time- 10PM - 6AM; during this time, all voices must be kept to a whisper; phone calls must be taken outside and any personal radio/televisions must be turned off.

    Restrooms/ Showers-  Showers are private stalls located on the second floor.  Restrooms are located on both the first and second floors.

    Laundry facilities- are available on site.  Washers and dryers are $1.00 per load.  Laundry soap, fabric softener and bleach are available to purchase. A bill changer is also available in the laundry room.

    Camp Store- We have an extensive camp store that offers many tolietries and Habitat and Camp Hope souvenirs.

    Meals- are provided daily by an AmeriCorps*NCCC team.  Vegetarian options are available at every meal.  During the breakfast hours we provide sandwiches, fruit, and water for volunteers to pack for lunch.

    Valuables-The camp is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.  Please limit your valuables.  Please bring a small padlock if you wish to use our lockers.  

    Internet-We have public computers with Internet access. Wireless Internet is usually available.  
     
    Location-Camp Hope is located in St. Bernard Parish in the town of St. Bernard, LA.  It is a 30 minute drive to downtown New Orleans.
      
    RideShare-Camp Hope does not provide transportation.  You must arrange for your own transportation to and from the worksite. If you would like to join a group page that enables you to exchange information with other volunteers or to coordinate transportation to and from the airport and to the worksite, please visit nolahabitat groups.     For those arriving by plane-  We have negotiated discounted fare ($55) from the airport to Camp Hope with a local taxi company, Arabi Cab, 504-237-2991; 504-914-3972.  If you use a different cab company, expect a much higher fare. Remember, you will still need to arrange your transportation to and from the volunteer sites each day!
