The Breaux siblings gathered on a cold, rainy afternoon to bless and dedicate the home of brother Byron, making him the third member of the family to become a Habitat homeowner. Byron Breaux’s new home stood finished next to a park in New Orleans East, while his sister Lynn’s Habitat home was a few blocks away. Diane, the first Breaux to own a Habitat home in New Orleans, was unable to attend. Joining Byron and Lynn was their brother John, who gave the home blessing at the end of the ceremony.
Leading the ceremony was our ReStore Director Wesley Griffin, who worked closely with both Byron
and Lynn during their sweat equity. Byron especially went above and beyond in helping out in the ReStore, continuing to do sweat equity there even after his required 350 hours were completed. Their commitment to NOAHH’s mission is an inspiration. Also at the dedication was Reverend Barriere, one of NOAHH’s Board members who has been a friend and partner with the affiliate for many years. He joined NOAHH staff in presenting ceremonial gifts to Byron, handing him the symbolic key to his home.
The ceremony ended with Byron sharing food and drink with the gathered staff, volunteers, and board members, reflecting on his time in the program, and getting a start on making his new house his home.
