On Friday, June 8, 2012, New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) will be dedicating a new home on Port Street in the Upper Ninth Ward for partner family Antonio Cottrell who is a participant in the City of New Orleans Direct Homebuyer Assistance Program which provides down payment and closing costs subsidies to eligible first-time homebuyers. New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity is an approved lender for the program.
"Antonio's participation in the City's Program is beneficial not only for himself, but also for New Orleans Habitat," stated Jim Pate, Executive Director of New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. With the City's Soft Second Program, Antonio will purchase his Habitat home as every other Habitat homeowner except that his second mortgage will be forgiven after 10 years where traditional Habitat mortgages will be forgiven over the full life of the first mortgage. Additionally, the payment from the City for the 2nd mortgage allows Habitat to put the funds back into additional housing units. "It's a win-win for Habitat's partner family and for the affiliate," added Pate.
Antonio was born and raised in the Florida Hosing Development in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. As the oldest of three children, his parents instilled in him a desire to want more out of life. Visually impaired, Antonio worked hard to finish school. When Katrina hit, Antonio relocated to Dallas. "The people in Dallas, Texas were so willing to help me," stated Antonio. "Then I met up with people from New Orleans Habitat and it was a blessing sent from God."
New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. NOAHH builds new houses in partnership with sponsors, volunteers, communities, and homeowner families to eliminate poverty housing in the New Orleans area while serving as a catalyst to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Since its inception in 1983 NOAHH has built over 450 homes for low-income families in need of adequate shelter. NOAHH plans to continue to build homes in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles and Plaquemines Parishes.
