NOAHH and Jazz Fest Celebrate Raisin the Roof

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Celebrated the Success of Raisin the Roof Housing Program with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity
Lunchtime Concert Showcased Talent in Musicians%u2019 Village Talent

April 29, 2009 (NEW ORLEANS, LA) On Wednesday, April 29th, ten musicians who participated in the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Raisin’ the Roof Housing Program helped to celebrate its success with a noontime concert and press conference with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH).

Musicians participating in the concert included: Shamarr Allen, Andrew Baham, John Duque, Sula Evans, Rik Fletcher, Rhonda Ford, Joe Jenkins and Stephen Walker. These musicians benefited from the Raisin’ the Roof housing program through the Jazz & Heritage Foundation and NOAHH. “Their support was invaluable when it came to owning a home and providing a stable environment for my son,” stated Shamarr Allen, Musician Village resident and performer. “It’s a dream come true.”

“The Jazz & Heritage Foundation has been a great partner for New Orleans Habitat,” stated Jim Pate, executive director, NOAHH. “Raisin’ the Roof Housing Program has been very successful for the musicians as are all getting settled in their new homes – taking on the responsibility of home ownership.”

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation realizes that musicians and culture bearers are important to the history of New Orleans. The Foundation has dedicated significant resources to the program to assist more musicians who qualify for NOAHH’s Homeownership Program. “The Jazz & Heritage Foundation is prepared to help those who help themselves,” stated Ron Sholes, board president, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. “Raisin’ the Roof helps the very people who build Jazz Fest and add to the value of the culture of New Orleans.”

The Raisin’ the Roof Housing Program is financed with proceeds from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. It is one of many year-round programs administered by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. www.jazzandheritage.org.

New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH), an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. NOAHH builds new houses in partnership with sponsors, volunteers, communities, and homeowner families to eliminate poverty housing in the New Orleans area while serving as a catalyst to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Since its inception in 1983, NOAHH has built over 317 new homes for low-income families in need of adequate shelter. NOAHH plans to continue to build in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes. www.habitat-nola.org
