St. Paul's Class of 1977 Dedicates Habitat Home
New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity and St. Paul’s School Dedicates a New Home in the Upper Ninth Ward Class of 1977 Pays It Forward in New Orleans January 14, 2009 (NEW ORLEANS, LA) On Thursday, January 15, 2009, the Class of 1977 from St. Paul’s School from Concord, NH, joined New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) in dedicating a new home for homeowner Eboni Davis.
The dedication marked the completion of months of hard work on the part of the Class of 1977 that began as an idea after their 30th anniversary reunion.
“The seed for this traveled from Whitney Stewart’s home in New Orleans, and planted itself in Concord,” said Talie Ward Harris in a letter to the rest of her class. Harris and three other members of the class organized around the idea to “pay it forward,” spreading good deeds by doing good deeds, in New Orleans based on tales from their classmate Whitney Stewart of the conditions in the city after Hurricane Katrina.
The group contacted executive director Jim Pate to express their interest in helping out. He welcomed their enthusiasm, saying, “We’re truly thankful for their generosity. It’s always meaningful when people from a community with relatively few ties to our own find the time and energy to contribute so much to our cause.”
They had four goals: to raise $77,000 for NOAHH; to bring a group to work in New Orleans for a week in November; to eat, drink, and be merry in New Orleans during their trip in the evenings; and to pay it forward by spreading the story of their work here to others at their school.
With the money they raised, they were able to sponsor the home dedicated Thursday and help Eboni Davis realize her dream of homeownership. Davis, an employee of the Louisiana Department of State, is a single mother who went to college for a degree in biology and the Mercy Institute for her phlebotomy certificate between semesters. Davis, like all NOAHH homeowners, completed 350 “sweat equity” hours helping to build her house and others through the partner family program.
New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. NOAHH builds new houses in partnership with sponsors, volunteers, communities, and homeowner families to eliminate poverty housing in the New Orleans area while serving as a catalyst to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Since its inception in 1983 NOAHH has built over 286 new homes for low-income families in need of adequate shelter. NOAHH plans to continue to build homes in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles and Plaquemines Parishes. www.habitat-nola.org
