Habitat News: Hornets and NOAHH back at work • National Building Museum Honors Musicians' Village Founders Hornets and NOAHH back at work October 5, 2006 New Orleans--New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets and New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) raised walls today on a new home scheduled for construction through the Hoops for Homes initiative. “We are extremely proud to partner with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild our city,” said Hornets owner George Shinn. “We believe the work we're doing here will help accelerate the recovery and healing process in neighborhoods across New Orleans." In March the Hornets and NOAHH helped the Winston family move into their new home, the first built through the Hoops for Homes initiative. Today's wall raising ceremony featured participation by three Hornets players, in addition to Shinn and his wife Denise, exemplifying an organization-wide effort to assist Habitat for Humanity in this venture. “As someone new to the organization I was really impressed with everyone’s desire to play a role in this program,” said Hornets guard Bobby Jackson. “This is important work, and I’m happy to be a part of something that helps rebuild this great city.” Hoops for Homes represents the Hornets partnership with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, and a commitment to rebuilding New Orleans brick-by-brick and house-by-house. Through a variety of community-based fundraisers, including an on-line auction and partnerships with almost 20 NBA teams, more than $1 million was raised to build twenty new homes in New Orleans. New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity handles the site acquisition, construction and family selection for each home. NOAHH builds new houses in partnership with sponsors, volunteers, communities, and homeowner families to eliminate poverty housing in the New Orleans area while serving as a catalyst to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Since its inception in 1983 NOAHH has built over 130 new homes for low-income families in need of adequate shelter. In the next five years, NOAHH plans to build 1,500 homes in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes. |
